Printmaking Ornaments
Description: For this project we learned about the history of printmaking and the tools that go into making prints. For this project we created Christmas ornaments. We started by sketching two different ornament designs that related/represented us and tell why we chose those designs. I chose to draw a camper because it is my favorite thing to do in the summer with my family and my other design was flowers because I really enjoy flowers. I chose to make my ornament the camper design. We started by drawing our final design on a piece of paper, then we took a piece of styrofoam and put our drawing on top of it and traced our drawing to transfer it to the styrofoam. It was important for us trace the drawing pretty firmly to make sure that it was indented into the styrofoam enough that it would transfer correctly. When it came to using the paint, we hand to get the paint/ink on our roller, then roll it onto our styrofoam print. We then put it on our paper and put a blank piece of paper to make sure we didn't get paint on anything. Finally we used a clean roller to firmly roll over the styrofoam to transfer it to the paper. We had to go over it a few times to make sure that the ink was even. We did this two times with our own print in either red or blue then we did two prints of our partners print in the opposite color. We then finished the ornaments by drawing the strings.
Extension Activity: An extension activity would be having students create three different prints that tell a story (beginning, middle, and end). Then they have to write a short story that goes along with the prints in the correct order. You can then display each students prints and stories on one piece of construction paper and do a gallery walk or a story time activity so that every can see and read their classmates stories.
